Manchester punch victim critically ill
A 26-year-old man is critically ill after he was punched to the floor in Manchester city centre.
Greater Manchester Police said the man was hit on Portland Street, near the Britannia Hotel, at about 02:30 BST.
Officers said the victim was in a life-threatening condition with serious head injuries.
His attacker has been described as black, about 6ft tall, of heavy build, and wearing a tight, light coloured top.
Det Sgt Paul Copplestone said: "Our inquiries so far suggest that the victim was punched just once, but it was the collision with the floor that caused the severity of these injuries.
"We have spoken to some witnesses but we are not sure of where the offender went, and what the background to this incident is.
"There are a number of drinking establishments nearby and if anyone remembers seeing a disagreement where the man described may have been involved, they should call us."
