Four people have appeared in court accused of beheading 18 birds at a horticultural centre in Manchester.

Frogs were speared and fish and birds killed in an attack on the Wythenshawe Park centre in May.

Gavin Wellesby, 19, and three youths, 12, 16 and 17, were charged with causing unnecessary suffering to animals and criminal damage.

They entered no pleas and were bailed to appear back at Manchester Magistrates' Court on 23 December.

Following building work, the centre reopened in August, largely thanks to donations from charitable groups and members of the public.
