An elderly woman who died after being hit by a car in Greater Manchester has been named as Karina Halsall from Sale.

Mrs Halsall, 85, was hit by a Renault Clio on Moss Lane in the town at about 15:00 GMT on Thursday.

She was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

In a statement her family said Mrs Halsall, who had six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, was "a wonderfully kind hearted person" and her death had left them "devastated".

The statement continued: "Words cannot express how sad we feel.

"She was an enthusiastic member of the congregation of St. Mary Magdalene church and enjoyed her shopping trips around the Sale and Ashton-on-Mersey areas.

"She leaves behind an adoring family, daughter Sharon also of Sale, son Martyn of West Sussex, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren."

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
