Christmas trees collected for recycling in Manchester

Christmas trees will be collected along with the recycling in Manchester this year, the council has said.

People wanting to throw away their trees can leave them next to their green waste bins and food caddies during any January collection day.

Residents can also take trees to waste and recycling centres in Sharston, Newton Heath or Levenshulme.

The trees will be used to create fertiliser for agricultural land across the North West.

Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "In past years, Mancunians have taken their trees to the local parks to be collected for recycling.

"Residents have been very enthusiastic about doing this, with hundreds of tons of trees collected, but there's no need for residents to do that this year.

"All residents need to do is leave them by their green bins during their January collection days. The only thing we ask is that they take the decorations off first and we'll do the rest."
