Police have released an e-fit of a man wanted in connection with an assault in Bolton on New Year's Day.

A 28-year-old man was discovered unconscious in Pole Street, Tonge Moor, at about 03:00 GMT.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he is said to remain in a critical but stable condition with a serious head injury.

Shortly before the attack the man had been at a party in Eldon Street where there was a disturbance, police said.

He left, making his way along Eldon Road, Stone Street and then into Pole Street, where he was attacked.

Det Ch Insp Sarah Jackson, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We are asking for anyone who may have seen or heard this attack in the early hours of New Year's Day morning to come forward and speak to us.

"I would urge people to take a good look at the image and if they recognise this man to contact us as soon as possible."
