London 2012: Manchester Big Wheel to make way for Olympic events
Manchester is to lose one of its largest tourist attractions to make way for Olympic events in the city.
The Big Wheel in Exchange Square, which was erected in 2004, will be removed in April to allow the area to be used during the Games.
Councillor Pat Karney said the wheel was a much loved attraction that the council was keen to see return.
He said if it was re-erected, it would be in a different location.
The Big Wheel, which is run by Great City Attractions, first arrived in Manchester in 2004.
A temporary wheel was originally placed in Exchange Square in October 2004. It was taken down in February 2005, before being re-erected the following October.
A second wheel has been in place all year round since May 2007.
