A man has been taken to hospital after a suspected gas explosion in a fourth-floor flat in Wigan.

North West Ambulance Service said the 60-year-old man was hurt in Lime Street in the Scholes area of the town at about 14:45 GMT.

The man suffered burns to his head and hands and a fire broke out at the flat.

Two other people who were in the flats at the time escaped before the emergency services arrived.

Part of the roof and the gable end of the low-rise building was blown away in the explosion.

People were evacuated from nearby properties but returned to their homes later.

A building inspector is assessing the damage.

Fire investigation teams are due to start their work on Thursday.
