A footballer has left hospital after suffering "severe concussion" in a car crash on Saturday, his club has confirmed.

Oldham Athletic's Filipe Morais was involved in the crash on Sheepfoot Lane near the club's ground, ahead of their match with Rochdale.

Greater Manchester Police said two other cars had been involved.

The club said the forward was detained overnight at the Royal Oldham Hospital, but was released on Sunday.

An Oldham Athletic spokesman said: "The player, who is still suffering from the effects of concussion, was reporting to Boundary Park on Monday to be assessed by the club's medical staff."

Speaking after the League One side's 3-2 defeat to local rivals Rochdale, manager Paul Dickov said the Portuguese player had also suffered "quite severe whiplash".

Morais had been due to start for Oldham in the game.

An elderly man who was also involved in the crash was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
