Nellie Geraghty death: Man denies killing

A man has denied killing a 79-year-old woman who was found clutching the strap of her handbag in Greater Manchester.

Mark Royle, 37, denied robbery and pleaded not guilty to the murder or manslaughter of Nellie Geraghty who was found near in Shaw near Oldham.

The grandmother had suffered head injuries on 24 November 2011 and died in hospital two days later.

Her handbag, containing her husband Frank's ashes, was missing. The ashes have not been recovered.

Members of Mrs Geraghty's family were at Manchester Crown Court for the brief plea and case management hearing.

Mr Royle, of no fixed address but formerly from Shaw, appeared via video link and was remanded in custody ahead of his trial on 27 July.

The hearing is estimated to last up to two weeks.
