The M61 motorway in Greater Manchester has reopened after being closed while police investigated the discovery of a woman's body on the road.

A lorry driver found the body on the southbound carriageway at around 02:00 BST between Junction 3 at Kearsley Spur and Junction 4 at Farnworth.

Greater Manchester Police had also closed two lanes on the northbound carriageway during the investigation.

A spokesman said circumstances around the woman's death were still unknown.

Supt Stuart Barton said: "A large-scale policing response is in place following this tragic incident.

"We are still trying to establish the identity of the woman who has died, so we can find and notify next of kin as soon as possible."
