Two men have been arrested after a woman was critically injured in a suspected arson attack at a Wigan flat.

The fire service and police were called to the first floor property on Redbrook Road, Ince, at about 21:00 BST on Sunday after reports of a fire.

A 25-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man were taken to Wigan Infirmary suffering from burns. The woman remains in a critical condition.

Seven surrounding flats were evacuated by the fire service.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing arson with intent to endanger life, and a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the same offence as well as causing grievous bodily harm, police said.

Det Ch Insp Howard Millington said: "We are continuing to keep an open mind as we investigate the events of last night as to how they occurred although clearly it is suspicious."
