Armed 'forensics' gang raid Co-op in Bolton

A gang of men wearing "forensic-style" suits and armed with hammers have robbed a Co-op store in Bolton.

Greater Manchester Police said four to six men forced their way into at the shop on Newbrook Road in Over Hulton, just before 22:00 BST on Thursday.

Police said one member of the gang, who was wearing "white paper forensic-style suits and balaclavas", hit a staff member in the head with a hammer.

The group went behind the counter and stole money from the till.

A silver Mazda, which police think was the getaway car, was found partially burnt-out on Masefield Drive in Farnworth later.

The male shop assistant suffered minor injuries.

Det Insp Chris Walker from Bolton CID said: "There were a number of staff in the shop at the time of this robbery, who have understandably been left extremely shaken after a group of men in forensic suits came into the store and hit one of their colleagues with a hammer.

"And all this was for the sake of a small amount of cash."
