Policewoman in Bolton run over by suspect driver

A policewoman was run over by a car after trying to stop a driver suspected of being uninsured and unfit to drive in Bolton.

The 31-year-old officer had signalled the driver to stop as the car approached on Le Mans Crescent at 15.30 BST on Tuesday, police said.

But it continued travelling and struck her, running over her ankle, before driving off.

A 42-year-old woman was later arrested and released on police bail.

She is suspected of failing to stop for a police officer, assault, assaulting a police officer and driving a motor vehicle while unfit through drink or drugs.

'Lot of pain'

The officer is recovering from her injuries, which are not thought to be serious.

Ch Insp Jon Percival said: "When she tried to stop the driver of the vehicle, they refused to stop, collided with the officer and made off from the scene.

"Despite being in a lot of pain, the officer had the presence of mind to provide details of the vehicle to her colleagues and an arrest was made a short time later.

"Thankfully, the officer was not seriously hurt and is recovering."
