Driver dies after 'drifting into' Withington telephone box

A man has died after his car hit a telephone box in Manchester.

Emergency services found the man collapsed at the wheel of his Jaguar on Princess Road, in Withington, at around 22:10 GMT on Monday.

A police spokeswoman said a witness saw the car "drift off the road before it collided with a telephone box".

The 66-year-old driver was taken to hospital but died later. The spokeswoman said his car had "sustained minor damage" in the incident.

PC John Marshall said officers were investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.

"We believe that the man may have suffered some kind of medical episode while at the wheel, prior to the collision," he said.

"A man has tragically lost his life and officers are supporting his family as best as we can at what is clearly a very difficult time for them."
