Alsatian puppies killed in barn fire on farm in Heywood

Twelve Alsatians, including eight puppies, have been killed in a barn fire on a Greater Manchester farm.

Firefighters were called to Holly Holding Farm on Manchester Road, Heywood, at about 02:20 GMT.

More than 20 attended, and tackled the fire in the single-storey building used for the breeding of dogs.

The fire service is not treating the blaze as suspicious, with the likely source a lamp which had been left on to keep the puppies warm.

Tom Hague, from Greater Manchester Fire Service, said the building was "well alight" when they arrived.

"It would appear that an infrared lamp has been left on overnight to keep the puppies warm and there seems to have possibly been some flammable materials left a little too near it."
