Police investigating the death of an off-duty police officer in Stockport have released CCTV images of two possible witnesses.

PC Gareth Francis, 28, was walking home from a night out when he was attacked in Castle Street, Edgeley, at 01:20 GMT on 20 January.

He was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital with a head injury and died later.

Police are keen to speak to a man and a woman seen in a silver Ford Mondeo parked nearby.

Det Insp Richard Eales, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "I must stress that all of the people in the images are innocent and we only want to speak to them as we know they were nearby when this tragic incident occurred.

"We are not interested in anyone's reasons for not coming forward so far - we simply want to find out what, if anything, they might know about Gareth's death."

A post-mortem examination concluded that PC Francis died from a head injury caused by a single punch.

A man has been charged with his manslaughter and is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 21 March.
