Stun guns, replica firearms, knives and a samurai sword are among weapons recently seized at Manchester Airport.

Many of the items, found at the airport since the start of the year, were brought in by passengers on holiday, Border Force said.

It added the weapons were often on general sale in countries like Spain, Turkey and Bulgaria with owners believing they were legal in the UK.

Knuckle-dusters, throwing stars and a nine-foot blow pipe were also found.

Sam Bullimore, from Border Force, said carrying items that are banned or require a licence is illegal.

"Just because you can legally buy an item while on holiday abroad does not mean you can bring it back to the UK," he said.

"If you are caught trying to smuggle dangerous weapons into the country or simply unaware of the controls in place, these weapons will be detected and confiscated and you could face prosecution.

"My message to holidaymakers is simple - don't risk it.

"At best, you'll have the weapons taken off you and at worst you will face a criminal conviction".
