A woman has been rescued after she fell 33ft (10m) into a river in Manchester.

The woman, aged in her 20s, had pulled herself onto the bank of the River Irwell near New Bridge Street, when fire crews arrived.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called at 03:16 GMT. The woman was later taken to hospital.

Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening. It is unclear how she fell into the water.

Mark Bamford, Salford fire station watch manager, said: "Using our rope equipment, we got the woman onto a long board and carried up about 10ft up the embankment and into the ambulance."
