Rochdale council chief executive in 1% pay increase

Rochdale Council's chief executive will receive a 1% pay rise of £1,300 after a proposed £40,000 hike following an independent pay review was criticised.

Councillors at the Rochdale Town Hall meeting voted in favour of the amended increase after more than 1,200 people signed a petition against the rise.

Chief executive Jim Taylor currently earns £130,000 a year.

A pay rise was also agreed for executive directors, which will cost the authority almost £40,000 a year.

The independent pay review recommended an increase to Mr Taylor's salary in line with other councils in the area.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk tweeted: "Well done to local residents for successful campaign against proposed bigger rise."

A Rochdale council spokesman said: "At £130,000 basic, he is the lowest-paid chief executive in comparative authorities in Greater Manchester."

'Fair's fair'

Under a new pay scale, the director of the environment's salary will increase by almost £20,000 to £97,185 and the director of finance will receive a rise of nearly £15,000.

The spokesman said executive directors were in new roles with more responsibility after the number of directors was cut from 24 down to 10 in January, saving the authority £1.5m.

He said: "Even with these increases we have still got the lowest-paid management team for comparable councils in the region."

Mr Danczuk said although he had been critical of the chief executive's proposed pay rise of £40,000, he had no issues with the new pay structure for senior directors.

He said: "As I understand it they have been promoted and have taken on more responsibility so fair's fair."

The council was forced to cut £94m from its budget by March 2013, and last year announced it must make further cuts of £45m, and lose 200 jobs, by 2015.
