Mother faces trial accused of Oldham baby murder

A mother is to go on trial accused of murdering her seven-week-old son.

Katarzyna Gacek, 24, of Roundthorn Road, Oldham is accused of killing Thomas Gacek as well as assault or ill treatment of a child.

Thomas died in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on 27 January.

Ms Gacek was remanded in custody by Manchester Crown Court until her next hearing on 13 May at Preston Crown Court. The trial date was set for 9 July in Preston.

Two men who also appeared at Manchester Crown Court will go on trial on 9 July with Ms Gacek.

Darren Butterfield, 35, of Ross Avenue, Chadderton, and Dawid Mokrzanowski, 26, of Roundthorn Road, Oldham, are charged with child neglect.

They were also remanded in custody until the hearing on 13 May.

Thomas was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital on 26 January with severe head injuries.

He was transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, but died the following day.
