Police investigating a 90-year-old woman's allegation of rape want to speak to a man who was seen in the area at the time.

The woman reported an attacker had covered her mouth and dragged her backwards in Spotland Road, Rochdale, before raping her on Tuesday morning.

A white man of medium build was seen walking on the same road, near the Sheriff Street junction, at 06.50 BST.

He had short collar-length dark hair and was clean shaven, police said.

He was wearing a dark denim jacket and light denim jeans.

Police are appealing for him to contact them as he may be a "key witness" to their investigation.

Supt Alistair Mallen said: "At this stage we cannot say what this man may have seen, or even whether he was in some way involved.

"However, we are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of what happened.

"Something has clearly happened to this lady so we would like to hear from anyone who saw anything."
