Leigh murder suspect arrested after woman found dead

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in a garden.

Police were called to Wigan Road, Leigh, just after midnight on Monday following concerns about the woman's welfare.

The victim, believed to in her late 50s or early 60s, was discovered in the back garden of a house.

A 57-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

The victim is yet to be formally identified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

Det Supt Jon Chadwick, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: "Our inquiries are focused on building up a picture of what happened in the weeks, day and hours leading up to this woman's death."

Police described it as an "isolated and tragic incident."
