An 11-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted outside a shop in Manchester, police have said.

A man approached the girl from behind on Northmoor Road, Longsight at about 17:45 GMT on Tuesday.

He assaulted her before fleeing towards Crowcroft Park, police said.

He was described as Asian, about 30, and of average height and skinny build with dark hair and stubble. He was said to be wearing a black fleece and trousers.

Det Insp Adrian Gallagher said the girl was "understandably distressed" and being supported by specially trained officers.

He said the attack would "obviously raise concerns and I want to reassure people that we are taking this very seriously".

He added that any child "approached in this manner [should] walk away and tell an adult".
