Some trams into Manchester city centre have been cancelled on the opening weekend of the Christmas markets.

Services from the airport, Altrincham and Eccles-Media City in South Manchester will terminate at Cornbrook because of work on electrical lines at the Deansgate-Castlefield stop.

Replacement buses are running from Trafford Bar to Piccadilly.

Peter Cushing from Transport for Greater Manchester said it was "essential" the work was not delayed.

He said: "We don't undertake a weekend stop closure lightly, especially at this time of year, but these are essential works that can only be carried out safely under a full stop closure when trams are not running."

The improvements at the Deansgate stop are part of a second cross-city tram link which is due to be completed in 2016.

Last year nine million people visited the Christmas markets, the city council said.
