A three-year-old girl was left lying in the road with critical injuries by a driver in Manchester who got out to look before driving away, said police.

The toddler was struck by a silver car on Ashfield Road in Longsight at about 15:50 GMT on Saturday.

Police said the driver, an Asian man in his 30s, stopped briefly before driving off onto Clarence Road.

The girl was in intensive care for four days but is recovering, a spokeswoman said.

PC Lee Whitehead said he wanted the man, who was driving a car similar to a Toyota Avensis, to "do the right thing and come forward".

"This was a serious collision which could have proved fatal," he said.
