A police investigation is under way after a man was stabbed in Manchester city centre, affecting tram services.

The victim, who has not been identified, was critically injured in the attack in Piccadilly Gardens at about 22:20 GMT on Monday.

Metrolink has suspended trams in the city centre while forensic officers examine evidence on a section of the tram lines.

No arrests have been made and police are appealing for information.

Det Insp Liam Boden, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "If anyone saw what happened or has information about the person responsible or motive for the incident I would encourage them to call us.

"I am aware of the impact us having a scene on the tram network will have for commuters.

"I would advise them to continue to monitor updates from the police, Metrolink or media and want to assure everybody that we are working as fast as we can to close this scene and get the trams up and running."
