A man is in hospital in a critical condition after an unexplained attack at a flat.

Police were called to the flat in Old Chapel Street, Stockport, Greater Manchester, at 17:20 GMT on Friday following reports of a burglary.

A man was found with facial injuries, but did not need hospital treatment.

However, a joiner arriving two hours later to fix a broken window found a 37-year-old man in a more serious condition.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition, police said.

Supt Denise Worth, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We do not know with any degree of certainty what has happened to this man, but he is critically ill and has quite possibly been subjected to a prolonged and sustained attack.

"We are keeping an entirely open mind and need to trace anyone who was at the address or knows what happened.

"We are working to establish whether the man who was present when officers arrived is the same man who was there when the joiner attended."
