Woman sexually assaulted outside Atherton club

A woman has been sexually assaulted outside a club in Greater Manchester.

Police said the attack happened at about 03:00 GMT on Saturday outside the Atherton Liberal Club on Flapper Fold Lane, Atherton.

A man grabbed the woman, 19, from behind and subjected her to a serious sexual assault, said police.

Police said the offender stopped and fled when the victim's friend who witnessed it remonstrated.

'No defence'

He is believed to have fled in a red Vauxhall along Rosedale Road towards Atherton Library.

The offender is described as white, in his late 20s, 5ft 8in (1.7m) tall, of a medium build with short light brown hair. He was wearing a black jacket and dark jeans.

Det Con Stuart Woodhead said: "Whether the offender was highly intoxicated from drinking that evening there is absolute no defence or excuse for sexually assaulting a young woman in this way."
