A search and rescue operation was launched after a motorist reported seeing a woman fall from a bridge, possibly carrying a child.

The woman is said to have been seen above the River Mersey in Sale, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday.

A fire service spokesman said the woman was reported to have been carrying something in her arms, "potentially a child".

Emergency crews were called to the scene near the A6144 Carrington Lane.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sent seven fire engines and two specialist underwater search units, and a police helicopter was deployed.

Paramedics also attended, but so far no-one has been found.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said the main search had been wound down by 14:00 on Saturday, but the underwater search would continue.
