Boy, 16, appears in court over Tameside biological toxin

A 16-year-old boy has appeared at youth court accused of trying to acquire a biological toxin.

He is charged with trying to obtain 10mg of Abrin under the Biological Weapons Act 1974 and Criminal Attempts Act 1981.

Tameside Magistrates' Court heard 0.05mg was enough to kill a human.

The boy spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. He was remanded in custody for a hearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The authority of the Attorney General must be given before an offence of this nature can be proceeded with, the court heard.

Police carried out raids in the Mossley area of Tameside on Monday.
