The M56 will be closed to traffic around Manchester Airport this weekend.

A new bridge between junctions five and six will shut the motorway from 22:00 GMT on Friday to 05:00 GMT on Monday, the Highways Agency (HA) said.

Football fans are advised to use the M6, M60 and M62 for Manchester United's game at Old Trafford and Manchester City's match in Liverpool.

Only drivers to Manchester Airport should use the eastbound M56 after junction nine at Lymm.

HA project manager Mark Mosley said: "Our advice to anyone - other than drivers heading to the airport to catch or meet flights - is simply: 'Please stay away'."
