Fire crews have spent the night tackling a blaze at a former college building in Wigan.

About 40 firefighters went to the fire at the three-storey former Wigan and Leigh College building on Bridgeman Terrace at about 14:30 GMT on Thursday.

Incident commander Steve Sheridan said because the fire was in the roof, it was "difficult to locate", meaning aerial platforms were used to fight it.

He said "strong winds" had also made fighting the fire difficult.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and local residents have been told to keep their windows closed.
