A blaze has ripped through a former nightclub in Warrington and torn the roof off the building.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said the fire broke out at Mr Smith's on Wilson Patten Street at 02:00 BST.

The building suffered "severe damage", with a partial demolition of the ex-venue planned later. Nearby buildings were evacuated during the fire.

Police said a local man, 43, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

At its height, 70 firefighters were tackling the fire. No-one is thought to have been injured in the blaze.

The fire service said the scene was dangerous for crews as the roof collapsed into the building.

Keith Brooks, area manager for CFRS, said: "There's a lot of smoke in the area, which is blowing towards Warrington town centre. It makes it a little uncomfortable for people without dust masks."

Roads near to the site of the fire have been closed.

The nightclub, which closed in 2010, was a regular setting for the Granada late-night TV show The Hit Man and Her presented by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan.
