A mock explosion and fireball on the set of Coronation Street as part of a storyline saw firefighters scrambled to the studio.

Crews were called after smoke and flames were seen coming from the ITV soap's set in Trafford Park at about 21:25 BST on Tuesday.

A spokesman said the explosion was a "false alarm".

ITV said filming was taking place for a storyline, airing in May, involving a fire at the Victoria Court flats.

It is understood the soap had told the fire service a mock fire would be taking place this week, with experts attending the filming.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) tweeted: "The Coronation Street set IS NOT on fire!"

The soap's set moved to MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, in January last year.
