A fault has grounded a Jet2 airliner for the second time in three days, according to a flight tracking website.

The aircraft had to return to its Manchester Airport base shortly after taking off for Rhodes on Wednesday and Portugal earlier, Flightradar24 said.

Technical faults were reported after take-off on the 29-year-old Boeing 757, registration G-LSAG, which had to fly holding patterns before landing safely.

Jet2 said the aircraft was "diverted back as a precautionary measure".

The flights to Rhodes and Faro landed back at Manchester Airport due to a suspected fault with the landing gear.

The flight to the Greek island spent more than an hour circling above Lancashire after take-off at about 10:15 BST on Wednesday before landing safely just after midday.

The flight to Faro took off at 08:25 and circled above St Helens before landing "without incident" at about 09:35.

Flights operated by the G-LSAG-registered aircraft show of the 15 journeys registered from 2 September only those two have been diverted, a log by Flightradar24 shows.

In a statement Jet2 said: "Our Jet2.com flight LS875 from Manchester to Faro has been diverted back to base as a precautionary measure.

"The aircraft landed safely, without incident, and passengers will be transferred on to a replacement aircraft.

"We would like to apologise to our customers for this delay."

The 1987-built Boeing 757-200 has flown more than 68,000 hours, Civil Aviation Authority records show.

The airliner has been in Jet2's fleet of 59 aircraft since 2006, having been previously operated from new by China Southern Airlines, according to aviation enthusiasts' website airfleets.net.
