An 11-year-old girl is in a critical condition after falling from an escalator at a shopping centre.

The girl fell 25ft (7.6m) at the Wheatsheaf centre in Rochdale at about 15:15 BST on Sunday.

She was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries.

Greater Manchester Police is investigating but said there was no suggestion of suspicious circumstances.

The Wheatsheaf said it was cooperating fully with the authorities.

A spokesman expressed deep sympathies for the girl and her family.
