Girl, 12, impales foot on railings in Wirral

A 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital after impaling her foot on a spike near a tourist attraction on Merseyside.

She had been climbing over some railings near Bidston Hill Windmill, Birkenhead, when she slipped just after 1900 BST on Wednesday.

Firefighters cut the railings and she still had the spike in her foot when she was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital.

The rescue took about 45 minutes, a fire service spokeswoman confirmed.
