A former photography lecturer at Liverpool Community College has been given a supervision order after about 1,500 images of child sex abuse were found on his computer.

Alan McKernan, 52, of Target Road, Heswall, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to 16 charges of making indecent images of children.

The artist is well known and has had work exhibited across the city.

He was given a three-year supervision and community order.

McKernan was also put on the sex offenders register for five years and made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order until further notice.

A Liverpool Community College spokesman said McKernan left the college in spring 2009 but would not comment further.
