A 21-year-old man suffered severe head injuries after being kicked and stamped on in Merseyside.

He was attacked by two men outside Marks and Spencer on Church Street, St Helens, on Sunday at 0320 GMT.

Police said they want to speak to two women who appeared on CCTV images around the time of the assault and may have seen the attackers.

Two men, aged 19 and 21, who were arrested on suspicion of assault have been released on police bail.

The man was detained for treatment in hospital.

Det Insp Gayle Rooney, of Merseyside Police, said: "This was an unprovoked attack which left a man seriously injured.

"There were two women in Church Street at the time who we believe witnessed this assault.

"I'm sure this is something that they would remember and would appeal to them to come forward as they may have information that could assist with our enquiries."
