Teenage girl 'critical' after Ainsdale crash

A teenage girl is critically ill in hospital after the car in which she was a passenger crashed on Merseyside while being followed by police.

The Ford Focus hit a street sign and a parked car on Liverpool Avenue in Ainsdale shortly after 0400 GMT.

The girl was taken to Alder Hey hospital with head injuries.

A man, 23, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and burglary. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were later arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Merseyside Police said Liverpool Avenue had been closed and motorists were advised to avoid the area and follow diversion signs.

Liverpool-bound traffic is being diverted towards the Coastal Road and a stretch of Liverpool Avenue is closed between Leamington Road and Liverpool Road.

Anyone with information is being asked to call road traffic collision investigators.
