Three people have been arrested over the death of 23-year-old Merseyside father Darren Bates.

Two men, both 25 and from Garston and Liverpool city centre, are being held on suspicion of murder and a woman, 41, on suspicion of harbouring a fugitive.

Mr Bates, who had a four-year-old son, died in hospital after he was run over by a car in North Hill Street, Toxteth, at 0020 GMT on 17 March.

The three are being held in police custody for questioning.

Detectives, who have been searching suspects' homes, said they had ruled out gang involvement in the killing.

Mr Bates, a keen sportsman, was involved in an argument with a man an hour before his death, which led to more arguments with up to four men on North Hill Street before he was run over, police said.
