Merseyside Police intelligence officer arrested

A Merseyside Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

The 43-year-old specialist officer who works in the force's Intelligence and Security Bureau (ISB) has been questioned and released on police bail.

He has been suspended from the force while investigations continue, a police spokesman said.

A 39-year-old man from Billinge and a 40-year-old man from St Helens were also arrested during the operation.

Police said they could not confirm whether the men worked for Merseyside Police.

They were arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office.

The ISB is responsible for dealing with Merseyside's counter-terrorism measures and for the monitoring and surveillance of the region's toughest criminals.

It has links with informants, described within the force as Covert Human Intelligence Sources.
