Warrington canal man's body murder inquiry

A murder investigation has begun after the body of a man was discovered in a canal in Warrington.

The body of a 57-year-old was found at the Sankey Canal in Sankey Valley Park by police who received an emergency call at about 1100 BST.

A 40-year-old man from Widnes has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being questioned in custody.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later. The victim has not yet been formally identified.

Det Insp Jo Miller of Cheshire Police said: "At the time there was a fishing competition going on at the canal and a football competition being held nearby.

"The area is also popular with joggers and dog walkers so we would appeal to anyone who may have been around the park at this time and witnessed an altercation between two men to contact us.

"We'd also like to hear from anyone who may know why this has happened."
