A Liverpool man who tricked his way into the home of a 93-year-old Wigan woman to steal from her has been jailed for five years.

Dennis O'Brien, 48, of Bibby Street, ran off empty-handed from the woman's home in Wrightington when her carer arrived, Lancaster Crown Court heard.

He was arrested by police later the same day on 10 October 2010.

O'Brien had denied burglary with intent, but was found guilty by a jury at his trial.

Speaking after the sentence Det Con Steve Wilcox said: "O'Brien preyed on a vulnerable lady in a despicable, targeted attack.

"I am pleased with the sentence given to him and I hope it reassures residents that such criminals will be targeted and put behind bars."
