More than 170 arrests after Merseyside riots

More than 170 people have now been arrested following riots across Merseyside, police said.

Almost 90 people have been charged with offences, including theft, assault, violent disorder and possession of offensive weapons.

Cars and wheelie bins were set alight during the disturbances, which spread from the city centre to Toxteth, Dingle and Wavertree.

Disturbance also broke out in parts of Birkenhead in Wirral.

Four homes were raided in the early hours of Sunday in relation to the rioting.

A 46-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were arrested in Garston on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply.

A large quantity of cash, clothing and class A and B drugs were also recovered, police said.

More cash and clothing was also found at other addresses in Wavertree and Toxteth.

There were no incidents of disorder overnight on Saturday, police said.
