Police are continuing to search the River Mersey for the boyfriend of a teenager who was found drowned on New Brighton beach.

Hayley Holmes, 17, of Wirral, was found dead by a dog walker close to Fort Perch Rock at 07:00 BST on Monday.

Her boyfriend, Robbie Crofts, 21, has not been seen since Sunday evening.

The North West underwater search and marine unit, the Coastguard and North West air operations group are searching for Mr Crofts.

A pair of women's sandals, a pair of men's trainers and a mobile phone were found close to where Hayley's body was discovered.

Det Ch Insp Ian Hassall said: "It has now been three days since anyone last saw Robbie and we are growing increasingly concerned for his wellbeing and are continuing to conduct land and water searches for him.

"It has come to our attention that the Travelodge, Marine Point in New Brighton, was fully booked over the bank holiday weekend.

"The hotel is near to the place where the shoes were found and I would appeal to anyone who was staying at the hotel on Sunday evening who may have seen Hayley and Robbie to get in touch."

Police believe the couple had spent Sunday together at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool.

Mr Crofts is white, of stocky build and about 5ft 8in (1.7m) tall, with blue eyes and short black hair.
