Shots fired at car with children inside in Toxteth

Three gunmen have fired shots at a car with three children inside as it travelled along a Liverpool street.

Merseyside Police said the Range Rover Sport was attacked at 16:00 BST as it drove down Cawdor Street in Toxteth.

Its occupants, a man in his 40s, a one-year-old boy and two girls aged nine and 11, were "left very shaken".

Det Supt Richie Davies said: "This was an extremely reckless act that could have seen the loss of the lives of three children and their father."

Police said the three men in their 20s, who were wearing dark clothing, damaged the car's rear window.

Mr Davies said: "The offenders showed a dangerous disregard for not only the occupants of the car but also for members of the public who were in the area at the time, and it is pure good fortune, given the busy nature of the road and the time of day that no-one was injured or even killed as a result of their actions."

The road has been cordoned off, house-to-house inquiries are under way, local CCTV is being examined and patrols have been stepped up.
