Off-duty officer stops shop thief

An off-duty police officer has arrested a man on suspicion of theft in a Merseyside convenience store.

A 39-year-old man had entered the Spar store in St Helens with a hammer about 21:30 BST on Wednesday demanding cash from the till, police said.

The officer, who happened to be in the store on Prescot Road, overpowered the man along with members of the public and detained him until police arrived.

The man, from Huyton, is being questioned by detectives.
