Rescue operation over Mersey boat fire

An air and sea rescue operation was mounted in the early hours after a fire on a sailing boat on the River Mersey.

The 23ft (7m) vessel, which was moored at a disused tanker jetty near Bedford Road East at Rock Ferry, caught fire at 00:50 BST.

It was towed ashore where fire crews managed to put out the flames.

The RNLI inshore lifeboat and police helicopter were mobilised and rescue dog used to search the shoreline, but no occupants were found.
