Drivers experience delays in Cheshire after M56 spillage

A diesel spill on the M56 in Cheshire has led to long delays for hundreds of drivers across the North West.

The eastbound carriageway was closed between junction 16 at Capenhurst and junction 14 at Hapsford after a lorry and two cars crashed at 04:30 BST.

Fuel from the lorry spilled onto the carriageway and was spread to a larger area by passing cars.

The Highways Agency cleared the scene and the carriageway was reopened at 11:00 BST.

Drivers were being warned of long delays in the area and on all roads approaching the motorway, from 05:00 BST onwards.

These included the M53 link roads, which were closed in both directions.

No-one was injured in the crash.
